The canal steps behind Baked & Wired are cold at nine in the morning and nobody minds. That is where Washington starts for me: a cupcake the size of my fist in one hand, coffee in the other, about $9 gone, the flat green water of the C&O sitting below the brick while the towpath fills with runners. From that step you can walk, ride and boat your way east across the whole city, eating something worth remembering roughly every two hours, until you end up on the river at the other end of town with vinegar on your fingers.

This is the route I give friends on a first visit, and it is a route rather than a list. It runs west to east and finishes on the water, because that is the direction Washington gets looser, cheaper and later as the day goes on. Everything on it I have eaten more than once. I don't write up a kitchen I've met on a single good night, because one good night proves nothing. For the monuments, the museums and the rest of the city around the plates, the Washington guide has you covered.

Georgetown before the crowds arrive

Baked & Wired (Georgetown, on the canal) turned 25 in April 2026 and is still the honest answer to the Georgetown cupcake question. It is bigger, denser and considerably less styled than the tourist-famous rival a block away, which is exactly why I send people here. The baking comes first, and a queue photograph does not appear to have crossed anyone's mind. Reckon on $5 to $10 for a cupcake and a coffee. It is counter service, no reservations, and the room is genuinely tiny: two to six of you is fine, and above that you will be ordering in shifts and eating outside on the steps. Open daily 8am to 4pm, which makes it a morning stop and never an evening one. If your plan involves cupcakes at nine at night, change the plan.

Lunch is three blocks and ninety years away. Martin's Tavern (Georgetown) has been open since 1933 and run by the same Georgetown family for four generations. Nothing in the room has been redesigned to look old; it simply is old, and you can taste that. Mains run roughly $20 to $40 and it takes reservations, which you should use. The character here lives in the booths, and Booth 3 is where John F. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953. Ask for it when you book, but understand the rules: it is first-come and it is very often taken, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason you came. The booths seat about four. A party of six or more gets a table in the back room, which is a perfectly good lunch and none of the mythology.

If you have one grand meal in you on this end of town, spend it at Fiola Mare (Georgetown waterfront). This is $150 or more a head with wine, and it earns it in two specific ways. The first is the Carrello del Pesce, the seafood cart that comes to the table. Order that and let the rest of the menu look after itself. The second is the river-facing terrace, the best waterside table in Washington, and I have never found one I'd argue for instead. There are private dining rooms and a large terrace, so six or more is welcome, but book well ahead; the terrace in good weather is not a walk-in proposition.

Downtown, for the day you give to the Mall

The monuments will eat your legs and your timing. Two rooms downtown are built to absorb the damage.

Founding Farmers DC (downtown, walking distance from the Mall) is farmer-owned, open 365 days a year, and relentlessly, permanently busy. It is $25 to $45 a head and it is the easiest place in the city to feed a mixed group: the eater who wants pancakes, the one who wants a salad, the teenager who wants everything. Big room, long tables, no fuss. Two warnings. Book weeks ahead if you want a weekend brunch table, and if you haven't booked, go at breakfast instead. The walk-in wait at Sunday noon is a real hour of your holiday.

Old Ebbitt Grill (downtown) is DC's oldest saloon and, more usefully, the raw bar a first-timer should actually use. Oysters are cheaper at happy hour and the whole place runs $30 to $60 a head. What makes it matter on this trail is the clock: it serves breakfast through to late night, every day, so it will take you in at 3.40pm when you have just come off the monuments dehydrated and out of sync with every normal kitchen in the city. It is also the best large-group room downtown by a distance. The Atrium, the Cabinet Room and the rooftop terrace take anything from 20 to 300 people, in a venue that seats around 600. If you are travelling with an extended family or a work group, this is where you put the one meal everybody attends.

The two dinners that explain the city

Washington's reputation for food was not built downtown. It was built in Penn Quarter and along 14th Street, and these two rooms are where I'd send you to see why.

Rasika Penn Quarter (Penn Quarter) reset what modern Indian food could be in this country, and two decades on it is still the most reliable answer to anyone who asks why DC is good at food. Order the palak chaat (crisped spinach, sweet-sharp, gone in four bites) even if you order nothing else, and then order plenty else. Budget $60 to $90 a head. Reservations go through Resy, they are essential, and they are often weeks out; set a reminder the day your flights are confirmed rather than the week you arrive. A 20% service charge is added automatically for parties of five or more, so don't tip twice.

Rasika Penn Quarter, Washington

Le Diplomate (14th Street) was named to Washingtonian's 100 Very Best for 2026 and anchors the 14th Street strip. It is a French brasserie doing brasserie things properly: steak frites, onion soup, and a bread basket good enough that I have watched a table ruin its appetite on it and not regret a thing. Around $55 to $85 a head. There are 260 seats plus private dining, so groups are comfortable here, but everyone wants the sidewalk terrace, so book ahead and ask for it specifically. Of everywhere on this trail, this is the smoothest bridge between the Washington of the monuments and the Washington people actually live in.

U Street and Shaw when the light goes

Ben's Chili Bowl (U Street) reopened in May 2026 after a ten-month renovation, and the chili half-smoke it has sold since 1958 came back unchanged, which was the only thing anybody was worried about. Under $15 a head, counter service, no reservations, and a queue out of the door at peak. It stays open into the small hours, which is why it sits here in the running order rather than at lunchtime: it is the late stop, the one you eat standing up after the drinks. Any group size works so long as everyone is content to stand and eat fast.

For a proper sit-down with a crowd, Maydan (Shaw) is the best large-table booking in the city and nothing else comes near. Everything comes off open live fire and lands in the middle of the table to be pulled apart family-style, which suits a mixed group of eaters far better than any tasting menu, where somebody always ends up quietly disappointed by course four. Around $70 to $95 a head. The entrance is deliberately hard to find and there is no useful sign. Look for the courtyard, walk into it, and trust that you are in the right place.

Maydan, Washington

The Dabney (Shaw) is the counterweight: small, serious, and holding a Michelin star every single year since 2017. The kitchen cooks Mid-Atlantic ingredients entirely over a hearth, and the smoke does the cooking rather than decorating the plate. Expect $120 or more a head. The main room is small; the à la carte at the bar and out on the garden patio is the version that suits four or fewer, and larger parties need to go through the private-events contact rather than hoping. It is closed Sunday and Monday, so build the week around it instead of discovering that on the night.

A market morning on Capitol Hill

Eastern Market (Capitol Hill) is the last of Washington's great 19th-century market halls and still a working neighbourhood market rather than a preserved one; people shop here for dinner. You will spend under $25. Inside, the Market Lunch counter has been turning out blueberry buckwheat pancakes and crab cakes since 1978, and the pancakes are the reason to arrive early and hungry. No booking, no door policy, walk straight through: it is the easiest stop on the whole trail for a large or awkwardly mixed group. Two timing facts catch people out. It is closed on Mondays, and the outdoor market only runs at weekends and on Tuesday afternoon. A Wednesday visit gets you the hall and none of the stalls.

The Wharf, and the end of the line

The Municipal Fish Market at The Wharf (Southwest Waterfront) has been trading since 1805 and is the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the United States, which you would never guess from the noise and the ice and the shouting. Buy from Jessie Taylor Seafood, which has held its counter here since 1939. That is the one. Expect $15 to $30 a head for a tray of shellfish. It is walk-up and standing room, no bookings, fine for any group size, but seating is limited so plan on eating off the tray at the water's edge with your elbows out. One correction worth carrying: Captain White's, still named in older guides, left in 2021.

如果你希望旅程以优雅而非盐渍的的方式结束,Albi(距离码头仅几步之遥,穿过河道)是正式晚餐的选择。

Fiola Mare、Le Diplomate、Maydan、The Dabney 而 Old Ebbitt Grill、Hank's、Eastern Market、鱼市、Ben's 和 Baked & Wired 则接受直接进店。
